National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week
Alcohol Use: IT'S YOUR DECISION
In the most recent (Spring 2008) NCHA (National College Health Assessment) survey given at SOU the following statistics were reported by SOU students:
17.2% were physically injured
34.8% reported doing something they later regretted
26.4% forgot where they were or what they had done
20.6% reported having unprotected sex
In addition, the perception on campus is that almost 40% (39.3%) of SOU students are using alcohol daily when actually less than 1% (0.7%) of SOU students do. When asked about the percentage of students who they believe have NEVER used alcohol the perception is that only 2.0% of students have NEVER used when actually almost 13% (12.8%) of SOU reported NEVER using alcohol. This illustrates that there is a large reality gap on campus about what is actually happening vs. what students believe is happening on campus. This is why it is so important for students to make their own decisions about drinking and not letting misperceptions and/or peer pressure effect the decisions that students make.
It is your decision when and if you decide to drink. It is very important that you make good choices about your safety when drinking. The following is a list of ideas if you choose to drink: drink slowly, set a drink limit, eat before you drink, avoid drinking games, use the buddy system, and/or alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. REMEMBER if you are under the age of 21 it is illegal for you consume alcohol and if you decide to drink you are deciding to take that risk.
