Geology Program
Mission
As the only institution in the state of Oregon dedicated exclusively to an undergraduate major in Geology, we have an intimate and unique mentor-student environment, defined by an unmatched level of personal contact, and replete with practica and research opportunities. Our mission is to (1) create thoughtful, professional scientists who are well-prepared for graduate education and meaningful careers; (2) instill a sense of careful, critical thought about the world around us in all the students whom we serve; (3) be of service to the people of Southern Oregon through our own expertise, and through our student research and practica experiences, which focus on issues and topics that are important to the region.
Vision
The natural environment of southern Oregon and northern California is complex, diverse, and in profound ways defines the people who live here. The region's climate actively drives natural processes that affect the Southern Oregon way of life. Water -in the form of rain, snow, and the great rivers of the region - is both lifeblood and potential hazard to the human population calling this area home. Likewise, the great volcanic mountains of the Cascades are also both boon and potential hazard for all living in their shadows.
Within the Southern Oregon University Department of Geology are specialists in water resource policy, hydrology, soil science, and environmental hazards: flooding, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. We are at all times using our expertise in guiding and directing our students in partnership activities with the people of the Pacific Northwest.
To our students: Our vision is to recognized by you as committed and accessible mentors, guides and resources throughout your educational experience here; and additionally throughout your life -whether leaving us as a professional geologist or continuing on for an advanced degree. Our vision is to be recognized by you as an excellent general education experience, the department of choice for teaching and guiding all with whom we work.
To the people of the Pacific Northwest: Our vision is to be recognized by you as an effective partner and resource in assessing and understanding this natural environment, and in enhancing the quality of life for all in the part of the world in which we live. Our vision is to continue as the premier undergraduate experience for geology students in the state of Oregon, helping you address the needs and issues of the region by providing excellent scientists who have an understanding not only of their discipline, but also of the region in which they live.
