CAS Graduate Program
The College of Arts and Sciences will be offering an interdisciplinary graduate program. We are currently going through a transition and are in the process of having the new program approved. We expect to be fully operational during 2009.
The interdisciplinary program allows a person to pick a major area of concentration (16-32 credits) and then one or more support areas (12 - 16 credits). There is also a core required of 4 credits (Introduction to Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies CAS 520 and Applying Interdisciplinary Theory CAS 521), a research course, a comprehensive exam and a final project or thesis. The program totals 48 credits (on the quarter system) with most full-time students taking 9-12 credits/term.
Currently the areas participating as major concentrations are:
Biology
Computer Science
Health and Physical Education
Social Sciences
Current programs available as Minor Areas of Concentration include:
|
Anthropology Art Biology Business Chemistry Communication Computer Science Criminology & Criminal Justice Economics Education Environmental Studies |
Foreign Languages & Literatures Geography Geology Health & Physical Education History International Studies Mathematics Political Science Social Sciences Sociology Women's Studies |
As part of the application process we ask applicants to write a proposal of their goals and what they want to study to meet those goals. They also submit writing samples and complete application forms for SOU and for the CAS program. An admitted student works closely with the Graduate Faculty Coordinator in CAS 520 to form a Graduate Committee, a team of three faculty members, and to further focus a Plan of Study and thesis/project. The Graduate Committee continues to advise and evaluate the student throughout the remainder of the program.
While the program is in transition, students are allowed to apply and attend in Fall 08 under the old system (School area program in Science or in Social Sciences) and to take CAS 520. Students would then be shifted to the new program by winter term (assuming final approval of the program).
Debi Holcombe is the Graduate Office Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences, and Charles Lane is the Graduate Faculty Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences.
